I've built software since 2005 and worked as an architect since 2007. Five engagements. In each one I wrote the code, not only the advice. On the larger ones I also designed the architecture, hired and mentored the engineers, and led delivery.

Hands-on delivery

Travelodge

Role
Lead Engineer and delivery lead
Challenge
The booking platform ran on in-house servers and needed an upgrade and a move to the cloud.
What I did
The booking platform behind millions of hotel stays, moved from in-house servers to AWS.Led the on-premise to AWS migration and the booking platform upgrade, and hired and led the delivery team.
How I worked
Split the monolith into services, one per business area. Hired the engineers, trained and mentored them in domain-driven design and clean architecture, and led delivery.

Specsavers

Role
Architect
Challenge
An enterprise retail platform ran on monolithic systems.
What I did
Teams release faster and more safely, and one change no longer breaks everything.Split the monolith into microservices on AWS with automated releases, and brought in agile practices and process automation.
How I worked
Designed the service boundaries and built services in TypeScript, FastAPI, Laravel and Go, in containers on AWS. Coached the teams on keeping each business area separate, and mentored the engineers.

What I did
Insurance data processing modernised, so it grows with demand without buying more servers.Moved it to cloud-native AWS as part of a wider digital transformation.
How I worked

Paymentsense

Challenge
Merchants needed to take card payments on the e-commerce platforms they already use.
What I did
Merchants take card payments on the shop platform they already use.Payment integrations across e-commerce platforms.
How I worked
Built the payment integrations myself: always-on payment APIs that meet card-industry security rules (PCI).
Hands-on delivery

Super Payments

Challenge
Card fees take a cut of every online order.
What I did
Shoppers save on every order, and Super earns on every sale.Built bank-transfer payments that skip card fees. The saving goes to shoppers as a reward, and Super earns a commission. I also set up the greenfield projects with automated releases, so the team shipped often and got client feedback fast.
How I worked
Wrote the API integrations, including payments for BigCommerce shops, and set up the release pipelines.
